SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4)
— Since Utah became a state in the late 1800s, most of its residents
have been members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
But according to a new study, Utah isn’t majority Mormon anymore.
A paper published this month in the Journal of Religion and
Demography estimates that the percentage of Utahns who identify as
members of the LDS church, otherwise known as Mormons, is about 42%.
The Method
To get their numbers, Cragun and his fellow researchers contracted a
survey of roughly 1,900 Utahns, with quotas for age, sex and ethnicity
aligning with official census data for Utah. This method is called
“quota sampling.”
Michael Wood, assistant professor of sociology at Brigham Young
University, who was not connected to the study, said quota sampling is
commonly used in the field with accepted limitations, which he noted
that Cragun and his co-authors acknowledged.
“It is a provocative study with compelling arguments,” Wood told ABC4
in an email, adding that “further research with a more robust sampling
method is needed to confirm the findings.”
In the survey, which was conducted in the summer of 2022, the nearly
2,000 participants were asked a variety of questions, and among them was
how they identified on religious grounds.
Initially, Cragun and his fellow researchers weren’t interested in
religious self identification but rather how Uthans thought about
science. But when the researchers got the results on religious self
identification, they were surprised.
“This seemed like a newsworthy little finding for us, because we
actually have data to show the state is not actually majority Mormon
anymore,” Cragun said.
The Church’s Numbers
According to the paper, the figures released by the LDS church are
not reliable for the purposes of determining the percentage of Utahns
who actively identify as Mormon.
This is because, so the researchers say, the church basically counts members as anyone who’s been baptized.
“Aside from a few who are excommunicated or formally ask to have
their name removed, members remain on church rolls until they die, or
until their 110th birthday if their whereabouts are unknown,” the paper
states.
ABC4 reached out to the church for comment on this story, but they declined.

The Book of Abraham Translation: Egyptology in Mormon Scripture
Why Mormonism Can't Recover from "The Book of Abraham"
Here's everything you need to know about The Book of Abraham, and why it was such a disaster for Mormonism. The Book of Abraham debacle has affected Mormonism's claim to objective truth - and this fact will ultimately be self-destructive for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Christians should heed Jesus' words about false prophets—it's not a matter of if they'll come, it's a matter of who they are.
Joseph Smith's supposed "translation" of the Book of Abraham papyri is objective evidence that the foundational Mormon Prophet was false.

A quick word to Latter-day Saints studying through the Old Testament in 2026. As an Evangelical, it's exciting that my LDS friends are studying through the Bible—especially given that they can use modern translations! I wanted to share a helpful tip that has revolutionized the way I read through the Old Testament. If you want to truly understand what God was doing in Old Testament times, you NEED to understand this simple truth. May the Lord bless your studies in the Bible this year.

Jehovah’s Witnesses have packed out Auckland hotels to near capacity for a major international conference, providing a major boost for the city’s economy.
The Special Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses will be held at Eden Park from January 9-11, with about 20,000 people in attendance, including 3500 delegates from 20 countries.
A spokesperson for the Jehovah’s Witness church said 38 hotels would be filled throughout the city and the gathering was estimated to boost the economy by $20 million, a figure confirmed by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited destination director Annie Dundas.
“Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, the region’s cultural, events, and destination agency, has confirmed that the Special Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses is forecast to generate 60,500 visitor nights and contribute $20.6 million to the Auckland economy,” Dundas said.
She estimated hotel occupancy is currently at 85% based on STAR Market report analysis, considerably higher than the year-on-year occupancy at 61% for the same period in January 2025.
Hotel Council Aotearoa’s strategic director, James Doolan, was also optimistic about the impact of the event and told the Herald the event has been a positive for businesses in the city and further afield.

Jehovah Witnesses are having a convention at Eden Park and Jonas Skogstroll are leading a protest for children’s rights. Cult will always try to limit their members access to information.
It’s always good when they show their dark side.
Today we was contacted by a young man that wanted to leave. I received a message from him later that said: “I told my mother I don’t believe anymore. I guess I am POMO now.

“A number of Hotel Council Aotearoa member hotels are reporting sell-out nights or occupancy in the high 90s for the Jehovah’s Witness conference,” Doolan said, “which is attracting both international and domestic travellers to beautiful Auckland.
“Major conferences like this one can be a real economic boost for host regions.

“As well as revenue generated by the conference venue and accommodation providers, delegates spend heavily at restaurants, attractions, transport providers and retailers.
“Many delegates will also venture further afield to other parts of New Zealand.”

Delegates and organizers had been spotted around the Auckland this week, including groups at Mission Bay posing with signs promoting the special convention.
A spokesperson for Jehovah’s Witness church said the event would be the largest faith-based event in New Zealand in decades with the convention being free and open to anyone who wanted to attend.

Since the Governing Body claims divine guidance, you have to ask:
Does the truth really need constant revisions? Whether you’re a current Jehovah’s Witness, PIMO, ex-JW, or just curious about Watchtower doctrine, this video will help connect the dots.
Commentary:
This 11 minute presentation is stating that the Watchtower is starting to re-think banning things like Mother's Day & Father's Day because there is no "religious attachments"! They already celebrate wedding anniversaries so what is the difference?
Will we see Kingdom Hall parking lots become tree lots this December????
